Velodyne Supports Breast Cancer Research

bcrf-funded

Last month, Velodyne ran a special promotion on our pink vPulse headphones. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we sold our pink in-ear headphones in a 2-for-$50 promotion with a portion of the proceeds going to Breast Cancer Research. We are proudly donating to our organization of choice, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We wanted to go beyond providing awareness and contribute to a foundation actively working towards prevention and a cure for this disease. A woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes and there are nearly 3 million survivors here in the U.S. alone according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation website.

“In 2014-2015, BCRF will award $58.6 million in annual grants to 222 scientists from top universities and medical institutions around the globe. In addition, $11.6 million has been committed to the international Founder’s Fund project focused on metastasis.” Mestasis is the spreading of cancer or tumors to other parts of the body than the place it first started. With sound financial efficiency (88% of their funds go to actual breast cancer research), this foundation seemed to be the best to receive our proceeds out of the many choices available.

If you are interested in making a donation to this foundation, please visit their donation page on their website.

Doing Good for Mothers Around the World

MothersUganda

This Mother’s Day, May 11, 2014, Velodyne is giving back to mothers around the world.

Velodyne will donate the proceeds of all products sold on www.velodyne.com over Mother’s Day weekend, from 12:00 am Friday May 9, until Sunday May 11 at 11:59 pm to OneMama. We have chosen this non-profit because rather than just providing monetary assistance to needy mothers, it actually provides education for mothers to become self-sufficient and financially independent. Starting from neonatal education, to healthcare awareness, family planning and financial sustainablility, this organization’s main goal is to empower women, families and their communities.

10% of the proceeds from our website sales will go to this amazing, global organization. Thank you in advance for your support.

Nationwide Primetime and SXSW

This month is a busy one for Velodyne marketing. We are participating in two trade shows that nearly overlap each other in different parts of the country. The Nationwide Marketing Group is putting on the Primetime vendor show from March 9-12, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV. This marketing group represents nearly 5000 independent retailers of Furniture, appliances, and consumer electronics in the US and Canada.

nationwidelogoVelodyne has joined the Nationwide Marketing Group as one of its newest vendors. Like the members of the Nationwide, Velodyne is a family owned, independent company.  Nationwide Primetime is a show put on for the Nationwide membership twice a year for the vendors to showcase product to the members and meet face to face. This Primetime show will be Velodyne’s first opportunity to introduce the Nationwide membership to Velodyne’s products. We will be showing our complete current subwoofer line as well as participating in workshops and conferences. We are looking forward to taking advantage of profitable opportunities at this huge buying show. Come out and see us!

sxswlogoAnother first for Velodyne is the participation in SXSW. This music, film and interactive trade show taking place in Austin, TX March 7-16, 2014 promises a lot of great exposure for Velodyne. This show will provide a great platform for marketing and promoting our business to a large but targeted audience. In addition to the trade show, we will have our headphones on display, complete with listening stations at stand 726, and at stand 401 at The Music Gear Expo as well. We are excited to connect with buyers, musicians and tech gear-heads. Of course we look forward to catching some great music while we’re in town. We are partnering with Cellar Music to put on the Jump-Off party at Maggie Mae’s on March 12. Two bands that Velodyne has worked closely with this past year, The Mowgli’s and Finish Ticket, will be performing with a host of other bands that will provide a rockin’ experience. We also plan to have headphone giveaways throughout the week. Hope to see you there!

Get Personal With Customizable Headphone Skins

brentshapiro

In the past year, Velodyne’s Designer Skins have taken on a life of their own. Starting off with 35 designs available on our website, the designer skins originally were created as a true fashion accessory to fit over our vFree wireless headphones to match any mood or outfit. Over time, we held a few contests, promotions and developed partnershnips that involved blank skins and non-Velodyne employees getting creative and designing their own. The “Artist Corner” has been a popular activity during music festivals and concert ticket lines. We have also partnered with the Anno Domini Gallery in San Jose, CA which has led to custom painted subwoofers in addition to several one-of-a-kind headphone skins that may have the chance to go into mass production.

Blank headphone skins are available at Velodyne.com for you to unleash your inner artist. They are available in both white and black. You can paint them, draw on them with colored markers, or add other materials for a true multimedia art project.

Most recently, we have released the vLeve headphone, which is the perfect base for any one of our headphone skins, whether it be Designer, Artist Series, or your very own creation. The sound is incredible for a basic headphone with the unique teardrop design trademarked by Velodyne President Marta Hall.

The most exciting development we have for the headphone skins is the custom design for musical artists, athletes/sports teams. We have designed a skin for The Mowgli’s, which we will debut at SXSW in March. We started by creating one for the 2013 California-Carolina All-Star game held here at San Jose Municipal Stadium last summer. From there, we have created many renderings that are still under consideration. There are other custom skins in the works, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, go to our site and pick up a skin for your vLeve or vFree. Or two or three.

How do you express yourself? The choice is yours.

Marquette King Visits Velodyne

marquettesmile

This past week one of our higher profile supporters came to visit us at Velodyne Headquarters. Marquette King, punter for the Oakland Raiders stopped by during our office holiday luncheon to meet our employees and sign autographs. Charming and humble, with a wide, genuine smile, Marquette showed great interest as he toured our production and warehouse area. He even got a rare treat, to speak to our CEO and Founder David Hall.

King played for Fort Valley State University, where he was MVP his senior year. In that 2011 season, King led the Conference in punting with an impressive 43 yards per punt average.  21 punts landed inside his opponents’ 20-yard-line and sixteen of his punts were for 50 yards or more. The following year, he got a 3-year deal with the Oakland Raiders but ended up on the injured reserve list for the 2012 season. It wasn’t until the veteran punter on the team became a free agent that King was really in competition for the job during this last preseason, which he secured when his competition, a veteran punter, was cut.

Marquette loves our headphones. He has unique taste and sense of style,  and he is very interested in creating a custom headphone skin with Velodyne. His favorite headphones are our vBold wireless headphones, for their deep, rich sound. These headphones enable him to move freely without wires. And, he’s always on the move. We look forward to trying to keep up with him in the off-season.

Work Off Holiday Excess With The vFit

3_blueRunning is my personal passion, but after family and work it unfortunately comes in third on my list of priorities. However, since running is my “ME” time, I make the most of it. If I’m not running with a friend, thus making a social event out of it, I am running with headphones. When I’m running with my music, I am making my own personal party out of my run.

I won’t lie when I say that the vFit is my most anticipated Velodyne product release to date. The vPulse is an amazing, well-reviewed in-ear headphone which I have used to work out but the vFit is a fitness-targeted headphone. The most attractive feature of these headphones for me are the sport ear hook to keep the headphones on your ears. Plus the vFit comes with 3 sizes of ear tips in 2 different colors to ensure proper fit. The cord clip to prevent flopping up and down when running or on an elliptical trainer at the gym is key.

From a technical standpoint, I am impressed these headphones, like the vPulse, come with a mic for phone calls and controls which are located on the cord. The 10 mm driver coupled with a 20hz-20Khz frequency response means incredible sound, living up to vPulse standards.

Cosmetically speaking, the initial offerings of blue and pink on black should meet the needs of most fitness enthusiasts who require good sound until other colors are released. These headphones should be available in time for holiday shopping so stay tuned. I know I will!

Meet The Mowgli’s

The band in San Francisco at Fisherman's Wharf during America's Cup 2013

The band in San Francisco at Fisherman’s Wharf during America’s Cup 2013

Velodyne has recently partnered with The Mowgli’s, an 8-piece alternative rock band with a feel-good message of joy and love. They are best known for their song, “San Francisco”, which reached the 11th spot on on Billboard’s alternative chart in this year. Contrary to popular belief, most of the band hails not from San Francisco but from southern California. Velodyne was initially drawn to this band for their folk,indie-rock sound, rooted in collaboration with their large group of artists, musicians and friends. We saw an alignment to our company values in their support for charities such as charitywater.org, relayforlife.org and URawesome.org and their desire to change the world by performing random acts of kindness and being great human beings. Notably, when a recent Austin City Limits performance was cancelled due to rain, the band held an impromptu concert at a homeless shelter and  encouraged attendees to bring canned goods. The Mowgli’s…such good souls! This year’s tour is aptly named, “Random Acts of Kindness” and we at Velodyne could not be more thrilled to nurture the band on their trek across the U.S., leaving smiles and happiness in their wake.

Currently the band is finishing their tour supporting Walk the Moon, but we are looking forward to spending more time with them when they kick off their headlining tour to promote “Waiting for the Dawn”, their major label debut on Photo Finish Records/Island Records.

Enjoy this song, which was the theme for the San Francisco Giants 2012 season and was prominently played during their World Series-winning year.

Step Out In Style to Fight Addiction

brentshapiro

Velodyne had the honor of teaming with celebrities in a noble cause at the Summer Spectacular hosted by The Brent Shapiro Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Awareness. Attorney Robert Shapiro and his wife Linelle founded their foundation when their son Brent succumbed to alcohol and drug abuse in his early 20’s. After the loss of their son, the Shapiros hoped to create awareness about alcohol and chemical dependency and stop the spread of this disease.

This party and fashion show raised over $500,000 for the foundation. Attendees such as Larry King, Paula Abdul, and Sugar Ray Leonard supported the successful event. Velodyne donated 35 of our vPulse in-ear headphones, the ideal fashion accessory for those on the go.

Marta Hall, Velodyne President, has been close to people who have struggled with addiction. “We need to recognize it as a serious illness and provide real solutions.”

The Brent Shapiro Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Awareness  seeks to conquer alcohol and drug dependence through education and support.

How Noise Cancellation Will Save Your Zen

vquiet_1l_600Enjoy this post by guest blogger and Velodyne employee, Jenny Ly. She’s a big fan of our latest headphone, the vQuiet.

Within our busy lives, sometimes it’s hard to find some peace and quiet. Nowadays, it’s considered a luxury to obtain some “silence.” Here in the Silicon Valley, noise levels are pretty high. Nonetheless, I still like living in a busy area because it keeps me on my feet. I always have something to do. So, how do I obtain some sort of silence and be in my own Zen, while taking the CalTrain to work? Noise canceling headphones, it turns out,  are the solution to my problem. Hands in the air like you just don’t care!

Of course, noise cancellation technology has been around for a while. In the 1950’s, it was used for canceling noise levels in airplane and helicopter cockpits. Imagine the grueling and loud noise levels for the pilots!

Active Noise Cancelling headphones are usually more expensive because it’s harder to produce this sophisticated construction. ANC headphones contain small mics on each side to pick up the ambient noise, which is sent to noise cancellation circuitry. Sound waves are created by the headphone speakers. The internal circuitry produces sound waves that mirror the external noise. Newly added sound waves and external noise essentially cancel each other out by the time it reaches your eardrums.

Passive Noise Cancelling headphones are based on the design of the ear cups to block out noise. The size and shape of the ear cups determines how much noise level is blocked. This type of headphone is more common, not as expensive, and less costly to make. It also works best for middle and high frequencies.

Now, I’m going to put my vQuiet headphones on and play Bruno Mars’s Unorthdox Jukebox album. “Treasure! That is what you are… Honey, you’re my golden star…” Makes me want to get up and do the Charleston listening to this song!
