    1. Excellent subwoofer

      By Peter December 19, 2011

I have been a satisfied Velodyne customer for many years. My first Velodyne product was the HGS12, which is simply amazing. I am moving the HGS to my new home theatre and needed something smaller (and less expensive) for the 2.1 music system in the living room. The MiniVee 8 fit the bill perfectly, although it was a bit above my budget. However I picked up this Photon8 (basically the twin of the MiniVee) during the holiday sale. Taking price out of the equation, this is a very impressive subwoofer. Bass extension down to 26Hz out of an 8" driver. Plenty of output for small to medium sized rooms. And dare I say, I think the 8" driver is actually tighter and more musical than the 12" driver in my HGS12.
I have listened to several other small subwoofers, ranging in price from $300-600, and this one blows them all away, both in terms of output power, and musicality/tightness. I have not listenend to many subs in the $700+ price range lately. But based on my experience with the HGS12 (which is the previous top-of-the-line model), I would say that this Photon8 can hold its own. It has exceeded my expectations in both power and sound quality. If you're looking for a great sounding small sub, this one would be tough to beat. I have seen some reviews complaining that the cabinet is not as solid as some other subs. Compared to what? Sure, it's not as solid as my HGS. But then again, it doesn't cost nearly as much either. It is at least as rigid and solid as any of the other subs I considered in the price range.
Very satisfied with it so far.
